I hope you and your families continue to be safe and well. I am writing to you regarding the arrangements for the new academic year, starting in September.

At Pegasus Academy we will continue to comply with Government guidance and will continue with some caution. As a minimum we will continue to:

Expect everyone in the academy (unless exempt) to wear a face covering in indoor spaces, including classrooms. This will be reviewable on a regular basis.

To promote good hygiene for everyone- use of handwashing and hand sanitising

Maintain our cleaning regimes

Keep rooms well ventilated

Follow Public Health and Government advice on testing, self-isolation and managing confirmed cases of COVID-19.

A key part of the Government’s plans for a safe return to school after the summer holidays is the mass testing of all secondary learners and staff, prior to their return to the classroom using ‘lateral flow tests’. This is a similar approach to the one taken when schools re-opened in March. Learners will be tested twice at the academy when they return. Therefore, this will mean a ‘staggered’ start to school re-opening, which is outlined in the attached letters that can be found below. Please make sure you read the correct letter for the year group that your child will be in from September.

If you have any questions please email office@pegasusacademy.org.uk

Kind Regards,

Mr AP Landers

Principal

The purpose of the meeting was to review the academy’s provision for our learners since March 2020. The inspectors have evaluated the actions that the Trust and the academy have taken to implement distance learning, support learners during the ‘lock down’ period, manage learners’ safe return to school and address the new challenges that we currently face.

No judgment has been made by Ofsted. A short letter to the academy is available below which details their findings.

Please could I bring to your attention the arrangements for the end of term: -

Following the Department for Education’s announcement on Tuesday 8th December 2020, we are following their guidance and designating Friday 18th December 2020 as an additional INSET day. The Autumn Term will therefore end on Thursday 17th December 2020.

Thursday 17th December 2020 - Charity Day in the Academy

Students should arrive at the normal time for their year group bubble.

Students can choose to wear a Christmas jumper in support of the ‘Save the Children’ charity, they must however wear their normal academy uniform below, for example, their school skirt or trousers and black school shoes. Those choosing not to participate must wear academy uniform as normal. Students can pay their £1.00 charity donation at lunchtimes throughout next week.

Students will be dismissed from the Academy at the end of the normal school day.

Monday 4th January 2021 - All students will return at the normal time for their year group bubble.

May I take this opportunity of wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

We look forward to seeing all students in the academy on Monday 4th January 2021.

Yours sincerely

We were fortunate to have a remote visit from OFSTED who wanted to discuss the challenges being faced by schools during the COVID pandemic. Two of Her Majesties Inspectors spent the day interviewing myself and senior staff via the internet on a range of issues from how we had safely returned pupils to a full time curriculum, managed learning whilst individuals were self-isolating and how we were supporting our young people to make up for lost time. I was incredibly proud to be able to talk about the significant number of initiatives we had put in place since the first lockdown in March. This information will now be fed into a wider research project resulting in further support being put in place for schools and young people nationally.

On the subject of COVID we have had an increase in cases recently although I must say that this week that number has fallen dramatically. I am confident this is due to both the national lockdown and our own systems that are in place in the academy. I must commend our parents who have supported and worked with us when we have had a confirmed case which has allowed us to quickly identify close contacts and ensure the correct people are asked to self-isolate. Could I just ask however, that if your child is presenting symptoms you do not send them to academy and arrange for a test to be taken as soon as possible.

To finish up, the Pegasus Christmas Tree is up early as we all thought we needed a lift in our spirits. Its only three weeks until we finish for the Christmas holiday and although it may be slightly different this year, I am looking forward to spending time with loved ones and family and hope you are too.

Dear Parent /Carer

I am writing to inform you that today I received information that we have a learner in Year 11 who has tested positive for COVID-19.

We know that you may find this concerning but we are continuing to monitor the situation and are working closely with Public Health England. This letter is to inform you of the current situation and provide advice on how to support your child. Please be reassured that for most people, coronavirus (COVID-19) will be a mild illness. The school remains open and your child should continue to attend as normal if they remain well.

Members of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) have acted swiftly to track and trace all learners and staff that have had ‘direct or close contact’ and instructed them to self-isolate for 14 days.

I am currently working with Public Health Protection Team and with the Department for Education (DfE) to take the necessary steps to ensure that all staff and learners are safe.

Whilst I appreciate that this will be unwelcomed news for some of our learners and their parents/carers, please be assured that our Distance Learning Programme will be implemented for all learners who are having to self-isolate. These learners should log onto the Academy website to access their learning for all subjects so that they can continue to access high quality provision.

The academy remains open as normal to all year groups apart from those self-isolating or have a confirmed case of COVID-19.

What to do if your child develops symptoms of COVID 19

If your child develops symptoms of COVID-19, they must not come to school and should remain at home for at least 10 days from the date when their symptoms appeared. Anyone with symptoms will be eligible for testing and this can be arranged via https://www.nhs.uk/ask-for-a-coronavirus-test or by calling 119.

All other household members who remain well, must stay at home and not leave the house for 14 days. This includes anyone in your ‘Support Bubble’.

Further information is available at: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19- stay-at-home-guidance/stay-at-home-guidance-for-households-with-possible-coronaviruscovid-19-infection

Household members staying at home for 14 days will greatly reduce the overall amount of infection the household could pass on to others in the community.

If you are able, move any vulnerable individuals (such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions) out of your home, to stay with friends or family for the duration of the home isolation period.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) are the recent onset of:

- a new continuous cough

- a high temperature

- a loss of, or change in, your normal sense of taste or smell (anosmia)

For most people, coronavirus (COVID-19) will be a mild illness.

If your child does develop symptoms, you can seek advice from the nhs.uk website at https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/check-if-you-have-coronavirussymptoms/. If you are concerned about your child’s symptoms, or they are worsening you can seek advice from NHS 111 at https://111.nhs.uk/ or by phoning 111.

How to stop COVID-19 spreading

There are things you can do to help reduce the risk of you and anyone you live with getting ill with COVID-19 Do

- wash your hands with soap and water often

– do this for at least 20 seconds

- use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available

- wash your hands as soon as you get home

- cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze

- put used tissues in the bin immediately and wash your hands afterwards

What you need to do:

- If your child is isolating please ensure that they access their work on the Academy website, set by their teachers.

- If your child is not self-isolating please ensure that they bring and wear a mask as they enter the academy building and any communal areas.

Yours sincerely

Mr AP Landers

Dear Parent or Carer

We have been made aware this morning of one more positive case in Year 11 of coronavirus (COVID-19) at Pegasus Academy. We have a significant number of Year 11 pupils already self-isolating; therefore, we have taken the difficult decision following advice from Public Health England for the Year 11 pupils to work at home for the next two weeks. Work can be accessed through Show My Homework and Distance Learning on the student portal. If you feel your child needs a device to access these, please contact the Academy through homelearning@pegasusacademy.org.uk.

The Year 11 Mock examinations will now re-commence on Monday 30th November 2020 and a revised timetable will be issued in due course.

We have followed the national guidance and, following a risk assessment with Public Health England (PHE) advisers, we have made this difficult decision. In line with the national guidance, we recommend that your child now stays at home and self-isolates until Tuesday 24th November 2020.

All Year 11 students should return to the Academy on Wednesday 25th November 2020.

We are asking your child to do this to reduce the further spread of coronavirus (COVID19) to others in the community.

If your child is well at the end of the 14-day period of self-isolation, then they can return to their usual activities and attend school.

Other members of your household can continue normal activities, provided your child does not develop symptoms within the 14-day self-isolation period.

For more information, please see the guidance for contacts of people with confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) infection who do not live with the person:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-for-contacts-of-people-with-possible-or-confirmed-coronavirus-covid-19-infection-who-do-not-live-with-the-person

What to do if your child develops symptoms of coronavirus (COVID 19)

Having been identified as a close contact, if your child then develops symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19), they should remain at home for at least 10 days from the date when their symptoms appeared. Symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) are a new, continuous cough, or a high temperature, or a loss of, or change in, their normal sense of taste or smell (anosmia). Anyone with symptoms will be eligible for testing and this can be arranged via https://www.nhs.uk/ask-for-a-coronavirus-test or by calling 119.

All other household members who remain well must stay at home and not leave the house for 14 days. This includes anyone in your ‘Support Bubble’.

The 14-day isolation period starts from the day when the first person in the house became ill.

Household members should not go to work, school or public areas, and exercise should be taken within the home. If you require help with buying groceries, other shopping or picking up medication, or walking a dog, you should ask friends or family. Alternatively, you can order your shopping online and medication by phone or online.

Household members staying at home for 14 days will greatly reduce the overall amount of infection the household could pass on to others in the community.

If you are able, move any vulnerable individuals (such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions) out of your home, to stay with friends or family for the duration of the home isolation period. If that is not possible, anyone with symptoms should try and stay as far away as possible from vulnerable members of your household.

For more information, please read PHE’s ‘Stay at Home’ guidance:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-stay-at-home-guidance/stay-at-home-guidance-for-households-with-possible-coronavirus-covid-19-infection

For most people, coronavirus (COVID-19) will be a mild illness

If your child does develop symptoms, you can seek advice from the nhs.uk website at https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/check-if-you-have-coronavirus-symptoms/. If you are concerned about your child’s symptoms, or they are worsening you can seek advice from NHS 111 at https://111.nhs.uk/ or by phoning 111.

How to stop coronavirus (COVID-19) spreading

There are things you can do to help reduce the risk of you and anyone you live with getting ill with coronavirus (COVID-19):

wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds

use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available

wash your hands as soon as you get home

cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze

put used tissues in the bin immediately and wash your hands afterwards

I am writing to inform you that this morning I received information that we have a learner in Year 11 who has tested positive for COVID-19.

We know that you may find this concerning but we are continuing to monitor the situation and are working closely with Public Health England. The school remains open and your child should continue to attend as normal if they remain well.

Members of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) have acted swiftly to track and trace all learners and staff that have had ‘direct or close contact’ and instructed them to self-isolate for 14 days.

As we finish the half term, I would like to commend the learners and staff of the academy for the way they have reacted to our COVID measures. Year 11 have really impressed with their commitment to their examinations in these uncertain times. We have seen over 95% attendance at our after school ‘Upgrade’ sessions for English, mathematics and Science with a number of year 11 staying for an additional second hour to benefit from further maths tuition. A further 40 Year 11s are having additional maths and English tuition throughout the school day. This has been a fantastic effort by them.

Our mock examinations begin after the break and although our Year 11 need some valuable rest, I am asking for support from parents/carers to ensure revision does take place at appropriate times. Year 11 have been issued with a range of electronic and paper based revision resources to further support them.

Well done to our Year 7 who not only have settled in extremely well, with a no real transition period, but also put up with me videoing and interviewing them as part of our Virtual Open Events.

We have done extremely well to get to half term with only one confirmed case who fortunately had been off school during the contagious period however, it is important that if your child develops symptoms within the next 48 hours (Sunday 25th evening) , that school is made aware as those in close contact on Friday may need to be contacted on the result of a positive test. If your child develops symptoms over the weekend you can contact school through office@pegasusacademy.org.uk.

I wish you a safe and restful half term.

Dear Parent/Carer

Outlined below is the process we will use this year at Pegasus Academy if your child is absent from school for an extended period due to Covid 19.

To avoid disruption to learning we have put in place a simple online system to support our learners and are running an online curriculum for learners to follow which is available through our website each week. This means that work currently being studied in lessons will also be available for learners to complete at home.

Subject areas are using the Oak Academy resources produced by the government, and other online programmes that learners are familiar with and already use at the Academy. Having used these excellent resources during lockdown, we are confident of their quality.

The quarantine curriculum can be found on the Pegasus Academy homepage under the Curriculum tab in ‘Distance Learning’ https://www.pegasusacademy.org.uk/distance-learning All learners will need to log in through RM Unify using the same details they would use to access computers in the Academy. Learners have been shown how to access this in lessons.

Whilst absent learners are expected to follow their normal timetable in their planner. All work completed should be brought to the class teachers for marking and feedback upon return to the Academy.

If you have any questions or issues regarding distance learning or accessing any of the resources please email us on homelearning@pegasusacademy.org.uk

Yours faithfully,

Mrs K Potter

Date: Monday 24th August 2020

Statement from Jo Higgins, Chief Executive of Dudley Academies Trust.

“I am delighted with the progress shown in these encouraging and rewarding results and delighted for our learners.

Their results are not only a massive improvement on last year, but a clear indication that standards of Teaching & Learning in our academies have leapt forward. It is also great news for our staff and I want to send a big ‘thank you’ to all of them.

Our learners have made improved progress in real terms, and I am confident that we will see improved results again next year. We can say to parents that if their children come to one of our academies, they will have every opportunity to excel.”

Jo is adamant that the Trust’s academies have made undeniable progress. “There has been much talk about grade inflation this year. The Trust has a proven model for predicting GCSE grades which enables us to be certain about the overall accuracy of our results. I was delighted to see that our teacher-assessed grades have been significantly raised by the examination boards. This is proof of the robust and realistic approach that we took to assessing our learners. All of the grades our learners achieved are the grades they deserved and the improvements shown by our academies are all real improvements.

If schools league tables were being published for 2020, I am sure that our academies would have moved up significantly.”

September Re-opening

After an incredibly strange year myself and all Pegasus staff are excited about welcoming your child back full time to the Academy in September. We have been working hard to ensure we meet current government guidelines for re-opening and would like to reassure you that your child’s safety is a main consideration on their return to school. We know that you and your child may feel anxious for many different reasons, which is why we have a full induction programme planned in the first week of September, including staggered start and end times and by returning learners to the Academy one-year group at a time, on different days, until the school is full. The start dates and times for your child’s year group can be seen below:

Senior staff will be on the gates to welcome learners and direct them to their year group base. Your child will be expected to wear full school uniform. Any learner who has ordered a blazer from Oakes that has been delivered to school will receive this on their first day, along with Year 7 and 11 receiving their free school ties. Can I remind you that blazers must be ordered no later than Friday 21 August 2020. Details for ordering uniform and PE kit can be found on our school website.

Due to the unprecedented circumstances we find ourselves in and to avoid the sharing of equipment, we have taken the decision to provide the vast majority of your child’s essential stationary, including pens, pencils, highlighters, a ruler and glue stick. These will be given to your child on the first day along with their planner. We would be grateful though if you could provide a scientific calculator for your child to use.

As further government updates come in over the summer holidays, plans may be subject to change. To keep up to date with any changes please regularly visit our school website or follow us on social media. We will also be sending out a final update towards the end of the holiday and publish our reopening plans and risk assessment in full.

I would like to thank you all for your support this year and wish you a safe and restful summer.

Yours faithfully

Dear Parent/Carer and Year 11 Learners

I hope that everybody is safe and well and coping the best they can during this difficult period.

We have taken the difficult decision to postpone the Year 11 Prom, which was scheduled for Friday 3rd July 2020, due to the current and continuing issues surrounding the COVID 19 pandemic. Whilst we are disappointed that we have had to make this decision, it is not all that unexpected. By making this decision now it allows parents to cancel bookings that have been made.

We would still like to hold a large celebration event for the year group at some point in the autumn term if government advice allows, hoping that some of the restrictions for social distancing will have been loosened by then.

We will keep any money paid to date towards the celebration event in the autumn, of course, should learners decide that they do not wish to attend then we will organise refunds once the academy is re-open.

To celebrate your time at Pegasus you are now able to get your leavers hoodie at www.academyshopdirect.co.uk/pegasus-academy-leavers-hoodie. These can be ordered online for just £14.

I thank you for your continued support at this time, which is difficult for everyone connected with the academy.

Yours faithfully
